Jules Gourley is the Director of APPA and a Retired Midwife (CPM/LM/LDEM) with decades of experience in birth work, postpartum care, and placenta education. As a founder of The Association of Placenta Preparation Arts (APPA), Jules is dedicated to raising the standards of education, safety, and professionalism in placenta encapsulation and postpartum support.

Jules' journey in birth work began in 1997 while pregnant with her second child and working as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor for the Women, Infants, And Children (WIC) program. This early experience ignited a lifelong passion for supporting families through the childbearing years. After working as a doula, Jules went on to practice as a Licensed and Certified Professional Midwife, attending home births and providing compassionate care to families during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

In 2009, prompted by a friend and client, she encapsulated her first placenta. This experience sparked a deep commitment to placenta arts and encapsulation safety, leading to the founding of APPA in 2014. Through APPA, Jules has played a pivotal role in developing comprehensive, evidence-based training that empowers birth professionals and placenta specialists worldwide.

With a strong focus on safety, education, and professional integrity, Jules’ work has helped shape the placenta encapsulation industry. Passionate about placenta education, postpartum wellness, and birth worker empowerment, Jules continues to contribute to the field by developing courses that provide a thorough, science-based foundation for professionals seeking to expand their expertise.

Melody is an advisor and former mentor for the Association of Placenta Preparation Arts. In addition to these roles, she owns her own business and works as a birth doula, childbirth educator, and placenta encapsulator. In 2007, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater with a bachelors degree in chemistry and a minor in sociology. Her career led her to work in chemical manufacturing and as a lab manager for a municipal department. She has worked closely with regulatory agencies, and was personally responsible for writing and maintaining technical, regulatory, and safety documents. In 2012, the lab she managed was awarded Registered Laboratory of the Year award for a large lab from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
